‘All social change comes from the passion of individuals’
---Margaret Mead---
Sociology is a subject which covers the various dimensions of our social life like the human behavioural pattern including the major social institutions such as family, marriage, kinship, education, economy, religion and so on both structurally and functionally. Sociology looks beyond normal, taken-for granted views of reality, to provide deeper, more illuminating and challenging understanding of social life. Through its particular analytical perspective, social theories, and research methods, sociology as a discipline expands awareness and analysis of the human social relationship, culture, and institutions that profoundly shape both our lives and human history. The Department of Sociology of Mahishadal Girls’ College was inaugurated in the year 1991 with the modest number of students and few faculty members. The journey started with the humble beginning where only pass graduate course was offered initially. Later in the year 2001 Sociology Honour course was finally introduced. Since then, the department has grown manifolds. This department is one of the best and energetic department of our college as we are dedicated towards the overall development of the students. It also offers a comprehensive curriculum to equip students with a sound knowledge of the subject which boosts the overall development of an individual student.
Our course aim at training students to critically analyse the social environment in which they live and become self-aware and responsible citizen. Accordingly, we also encourage each student to express themselves and share their views regarding the society at large. Though the number of students is manageable in our department but we prefer to go for one-to-one relationship with students, as the total number of students are divided among the specific teacher, who in-fact is their counsellor and mentor as well.
Apart from traditional Chalk and Talk method the department follow other modes of teaching learning methods like e-learning method, audio video method (specially screening of movie), organising student seminar, quiz, debates, filed work, periodical academic tour and wall magazine which basically focus on gender sensitization incorporating women related issues and LBGTQIA++ communities. The department also has a seminar library to immediately support the students academically apart from the College Central Library. The department along with the regular courses provides Add-On Certificate Courses and remedial courses for the better assistance of the students. The community assistance programme at the orphanage home and gender sensitization in and around the campus through students’ participation through the ‘pride march’ are one of the best practices of the department at present. Along with the periodical assessment test to measure the progress of the students, the performance of the teacher is also evaluated through feedback form and departmental audit book. A keen relation is maintained with the parents of the students through parent’s teachers meeting and other online mode in order to keep a proper check in students’ academic performance. Alumni association is also well maintained by the department as we have two faculties who is the ex- student of the department itself.
