The Department of Sanskrit is one of the strongest departments in Mahishadal Girls’ College, which has opened on 08th January, 1969. In that time it was taught as a pass subject. Then Honours course of this subject had been started from 20th June, 2002 in our college. Since inception the department has remained engaged in popularizing the Study of Sanskrit language and literature in the region. The particular objectives of the Department of Sanskrit are to guide and assist the students in the pursuit of knowledge and in various disciplines in Sanskrit Language and Literature. The Department organizes Seminars, Workshops, Lecture Programs, Debates and Quiz time to times to enrich the students with curriculum beyond the syllabus. The departmental Wall Magazine named “Shraddharghyam” is published in every year to inspire the learners by the publish of their own writings and drawings. The department celebrates many cultural and innovative programs during the whole year such as Fresher’s welcome, World Sanskrit day, International Yoga Day, Teachers’ Day and Farewell etc. Every day begins with Saraswati Vandana and Vedic chanting which is performed by the students and teachers before the start of classes. It is one of the best practices of the department. The department has a departmental Seminar Library which has more than 200 books and students can access freely when needed.  The department arranges the Educational Tour in every year. The number of faculty members of the department is now Five and Dr. Basudev Panda is the HOD of this department. The Faculty Members regularly participate in different Seminars, Workshop and Conference for improving their teaching skills in higher education. The department aims to provide confidence and opportunity to the young generation enabling them to innovate paths of wisdom. The department endeavors to help them in applying the core knowledge of our ancient Sanskrit literature to their own field of interest or expertise with a vision that they can lead the world to better opportunities and positive environment in all stream of knowledge. Many students have passed out from the department and have distinguished themselves in many walks of life. As a result the department has inherited a very rich academic tradition.
