Mahishadal Girls’ College, one of the oldest Girl’s College in undivided Medinipur district, established in August 1969, is a wonderful phenomenon in the educational scenario of Medinipur district. Since 2006, General course in Mathematics has been introduced and bourgeoning successfully with the keen support of the departmental teachers. At 2011, Honours course was affiliated by Vidyasagar University. But in 2012 the first batch of the Honours students are admitted. Most of the passed-out students have been engaged in their higher study that is M.Sc. and B.Ed from our department. Some of students are joined in different job sectors also. Recently, the college and department also offer an online certificate course on LATEX. The department also offers guidance cum supervision of JAM, NET and GATE exam of final year (6th SEM) as well as passed out students also.
In addition to the traditional chalk and talk method classes, special interactive classes by applying group discussion, question-answer and demonstration method are arranged to encourage the students and thereby improve their learning. In-house seminars frequently organized by the department help the students acquire knowledge, skill and self-confidence. Special classes are held during the study leave of the students with special attention paid to slow learners. Classes are taken through the use of technology by means of Power Point Presentation (ppt.) etc. We have our own departmental Wall Magazine named as “MATHOMANIA”. The hidden creativity of the students is manifested through the publication of Wall Magazines in the department. Students are encouraged to take part in NSS, NCC and cultural activities to promote the sense of various activities among the students. The Faculty Members regularly participate in different Seminars, Workshop and Conference for improving their teaching skills in higher education.
Mathematics Department of Mahishadal Girls’ College can take pride in having some of the most enthusiastic and dedicated teachers of the college. Departmental Seminars are being held regularly to improve the overall performance of the students and lead them towards research motivation. But in addition to the formal methods, the greatest strength of the department has been the teacher-student intimate relationship that has kept the department alive.
